EDITORIAL - Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders: Mirabella, Sytko, Cole and Zapolski

For at least 15 years, Union County has been ruled by an all-Democrat Freeholder Board, and while the current officials have been successful with at least a few initiatives, there is a great deal of complacency on the dais, whether or not officials care to admit it. Without a doubt, more balance is needed and for this reason, we support Republicans Anthony Sytko and Nicole D. Cole for two of the three available seats on the freeholder board and Republican Art Zapolski for the Union County Surrogate position.
We also support the re-election of Freeholder Chairman Alexander Mirabella, who has been a productive member of the board during his term. Mirabella seems to genuinely care about the county. He has shown a particular interest in county programs that assist children senior citizens and historical groups in the area. As a long-time Democrat under the stronghold of a party leadership that rules with a heavy and influential hand, we would encourage him to remain open to opinions and suggestions that differ from the majority.
A newcomer to the freeholder race, Sytko is not new to politics in Union County. As a councilman in Garwood, he has been outspoken on a number of issues. As a fiscal conservative he will monitor county spending and although his vote alone may not prevent the freeholder majority from all wasteful spending, his presence will help shine a light on unnecessary expenses.
Along with Cole - an attorney who seems to take a common sense approach when voicing opinions on some of the county's problems - Sytko will provide a balance that's desperately needed on the all-Democrat freeholder board. It's a balance that's been needed for about 15 years.
In the position of surrogate of the county - a five-year, elected officer responsible for everything from probating wills to conducting educational seminars - we believe Zapolski will help bring this vital position into the 21st Century by implementing more technology and enhancing communication with county residents that have business to conduct with the surrogate's office.
Business as usual just isn't good enough anymore in Union County and one-party rule does not provide the needed system of checks and balances to ensure that all residents are represented fairly. When voters go to the polls Tuesday, we urge them to support Nicole D. Cole, Alexander Mirabella and Anthony Sytko for the three available seats on the freeholder board and Art Zapolski for the position of surrogate.
